Preparatory Course for Able Seafarer Engine

The able seafarer ENGINE (COP-ENGINE) course is designed to train seafarers who sailed onboard in Engine department, to upgrade their level of knowledge and skills. This training programme will enable the seafarers who sailed onboard, to qualify with recognized qualification as per STCW 1978 convention as amended as an ABLE SEAFARER ENGINE. The aim of this course is to meets the mandatory minimum requirements for the knowledge understanding and proficiency specified in STCW Code Section A-III/5, Table A-III/5 for the following functions.

Function 1- Marine engineering at the support level

Function 2- Electrical, electronic and control engineering at the support level,

Function 3 - Maintenance and repair at the support level.

Function 4 -Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the Support level

Course Requirement

  • 01Candidates who wish to undergo an approved training in a training institute shall notify the relevant examiner at the DGMS office and confirm his eligibility
  • 02Letter of eligibility shall be issued by chief examiner to candidates, who met the requirements ;
  • aShall be not less than 18 years of age on the date of commencement of the examination for the issue of the certificate
  • bMeet the requirements for certification as a rating forming part of an engineering watch; ,
  • cA birth certificate, a passport or a Seafarer’s national Identity Document can be accepted as proof of identity
  • di)An eyesight standards test certificate confirming the standards specified in the table A-I/9 of the Convention
  • ii)A medical and physical fitness test certificate confirming the standards specified in the table B-I/9 of the Convention
  • eWhile qualified to serve as a rating forming part of a engine-room watch, have completed approved seagoing service in the engine department of;
  • i). not less than 18 months, or
  • ii). not less than 12 months and have completed approved training and meet the standard of competence specified in section A-III/5 of the Code
  • fProduce documentary evidence of;
  • i). Sea service as required in above (e); and
  • ii). Engine-room watch keeping duties covering minimum of 03 months;
  • iii). Filled approved Training Record Book (TRB – Engine Rating/Able Seafarer Engine) supported with a separate book for given assignments with up to the satisfaction of the examiner
